First off the nylon construction is lightweight which makes them comfy and cool, literally. The use of pink in the color blocking is what really sets this thing over the top tho. Midsole, swoosh rimming and lining all add up to really great subtle detailing. The birch color makes them able to go from summer to fall also. These are not available stateside yet but if you are overseas hit up wellgosh.

Atelier Van Lieshout | Casade

Dutch designers Atelier Van Lieshout will unveil an eight metre-tall sculpture featuring oil drums and human figures in Rotterdam tomorrow. Called Cascade, the piece was commissioned by Sculpture International Rotterdam and is made of polyester. Eighteen barrels form a column over which the figures are draped.

The eight-metre tall sculpture is made of polyester, a material that can almost be regarded as the signature of Atelier Van Lieshout. Eighteen stacked oil drums, which appear to descend from the sky like a waterfall, combine to form a monumental column. From the life-size drums drips a syrupy mass in which one can make out the shapes of a score of human figures. They are anonymous beings, many of them in dramatic poses. Some of them climb upwards. In comparison with the robust contours of the oil drums, the figures are limp and formless. Despite that, these shapes form a network that supports the column. Drums and human shapes, rigid and limp forms, have melted together into a single whole.

From designers Balmori Associates, the New York based landscape and urban design office, Dr. Balmori chose to sit the garden on the steps between two Arata Isozaki towers leading to Santiago Calatrava’s footbridge over the Nervion River.
“The garden climbs the stairs, running in undulating lines of different textures and colors. Envisioned as a dynamic urban space; it moves in time and with the seasons. Its lush planting cascades down as though the garden was flowing or melting, bleeding the colors into each other. In one gesture, it narrates a story of landscape taking over and expanding over the Public Space and Architecture, therefore transforming the way that the stairs and the space is perceived and read by the user. It is a garden of contrasts: the contrast between native and exotic plants, between the red flowers and the green grass, between the green grass and the grey paving. In form, the garden engages the horizontal plaza with the rising vertical plane of the steps and the upright gesture of Eduardo Chillida’s sculpture. Like the famous Spanish Steps in Rome, the garden is not only designed for visitors to ascend and descend, but for them to linger, and just be.” Photography the Garden by Iwan Baan.

Designer Daizi Zheng has designed an eco friendly phone for Nokia, which runs on Coca-Cola drinks. Yes, its fuel cells generates electricity from carbohydrates(sugar) in the Coke and it can run on any sugary water, not just Coke. Daizi writes: "The concept is using bio battery to replace the traditional battery to create a pollution free environment. Bio battery is an ecologically friendly energy generates electricity from carbohydrates (currently sugar) and utilizes enzymes as the catalyst. By using bio battery as the power source of the phone, it only needs a pack of sugary drink and it generates water and oxygen while the battery dies out. Bio battery has the potential to operate three to four times longer on a single charge than conventional lithium batteries and it could be fully biodegradable. Meanwhile, it brings a whole new perception to batteries and afternoon tea. "

As declared by the architect, the museum is ‘not a object-container, but rather a campus for art’, where flows and pathways overlap and connect in order to create a dynamic and interactive space. Although the program is clear and organized in plan, flexibility of use is the main goal of the project. Continuity of spaces makes it a suitable place for any kind of moving and temporary exhibition, without redundant wall divisions or interruptions. Entering the atrium, the main elements of the project are evident: concrete curved walls, suspended black staircases, open ceiling catching natural light. By these elements Zaha Hadid intended ‘a new fluid kind of spatiality of multiple perspective points and fragmented geometry, designed to embody the chaotic fluidity of modern life’.

This statement of the architect, as usual of hers, brought out the question if the concept of de-constructed fluidity matched with the identity of a “static” city as Rome, and with its classical heritage. The response of critics and public has been positive. Especially in this context, in the relation with the existing fabrics, the curved smooth walls dialogue with the neo-classical symmetrical facades. The new organism includes in its developing the front- side building, by clean and blind surfaces at the side, thus declaring the feasibility and the need of coexistence. The museum is well inserted in the urban block situation, taking from it its guidelines, and opening its cut-end wings as panoramic viewpoints.

Particular attention has been given to the natural lighting, by the thin concrete beams on the ceiling, together with glass covering and filtering systems. The same beams have a bottom rail from which art pieces are going to be suspended. The beams, the staircases and the linear lighting system guide the visitors through the interior walkway, which ends in the large space on third level. From here, a large window offers a view back to the city, though obstructed by a massive core.

The museum participates actively to the location – Rome, and its first outskirt, not a part of the old centre, but still central. The Flaminio neighbourhood has been interested in the last years by a renovation program of public attraction, the latest being the Auditorium by Renzo Piano. The long MAXXI construction process completes the idea of a renewed city. Moreover, MAXXI is the first national museum of contemporary art in Italy. It will bring a lot of attentions, by public and media, together with economical activities, rendering this museum a central point for Rome, which is in constant look for its contemporary identity.

The rear wheel drive LFA is powerful with its 4.8 litre V10 powerplant pushing 560ps (552bhp) at 354 lb-ft of torque that revs up to 9,000 rpm redline. Mated with six speed sequential gearbox and clocking 0-62mph in just 3.7 seconds at top speed of 202 mph.

Aesthetically though, it could be divided with a mixture of straight edge and curves creating an aggressive look. One thing that will cause for a consideration is its price point at $375,000 and only 500 units will be produced.

Working closely with the newly opened Ace Hotel in New York City, creative duo MINT&SERF (aka MIRF) helped curate a special project where a selection of hotel rooms became giant blank canvas. For the duration of 6 months, invited artists such as Brian Procell, Enjoy Banking, Faust, Machine (Team Facelift), Mosco, PegLeg, Pork, Pablo Powers, Jordan Seiler, Stephen Holding, Sean Vegezzi, Tristan Eaton, and of course MINT&SERF decorated the interior to their own liking. In turn the rooms also become a narrative for each artist to tell their story through their works and tried their hands on interior decorating. Text via whitecube: Damián Ortega’s work explores specific economic, aesthetic and cultural situations and in particular how regional culture affects commodity consumption. He began his career as a political cartoonist and his art has the intellectual rigour and sense of playfulness often associated with his previous occupation. He creates sculptures, installations, videos and actions inspired by a wide range of mundane objects, from golf balls and pick-axes to bricks, rubbish bins and even tortillas, all subjected to what has been described as Ortega’s characteristically “mischievous process of transformation and dysfunction”. In Cosmic Thing (2002), one of his most celebrated works, Ortega disassembled a Volkswagen Beetle car and re-composed it piece by piece, suspended from wire in mid-air, in the manner of a mechanic’s instruction manual. The result was both a diagram and a fragmented object that offered a new way of seeing the “people’s car” first developed in Nazi Germany but now produced in his native Mexico. In Spirit (2005), Ortega constructed a series of architectural spaces using recycled materials which, when viewed from above, spelt out the letters of the work’s title, playing with the idea of optical and physical illusion

German performance house AVUS Performance have released their Audi TT-RS upgrade package that makes a considerable increase in performance as well as agressive looks to match. The standard TT-RS is by no means a tame beast that pumps out 340hp at 332lb-ft (450Nm) of torque and run from 0-60mph in 4.6 seconds at 155mph (250km/h) which can not be exceeded due to electronic limiter.

By comparison to the standard version AVUS have pulled out huge 460bhp out of the 2.5 liter five cyclinder engine at 472lb-ft (639Nm) of torque. This means that the car will do 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds and reaching top speeds of 194mph (312 km/h). This is realized by the modification to the normal ECU, overhaul of the turbo and high flow exhaust system with racing catalytic converter. Also adjustable coilover suspension is added with matte black vinyl wrap and gloss black 20 inch Sportec Mono wheels giving it a menacing visual on the street.

Paris-based Agence Jouin Manku took on its first large-scale integrated architectural and interior design commission in 2003, when YTL Design Group from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, invited it to design the residence of a Malaysian power family.
Completed in the latter part of 2008, the residence is the ultimate expression of the taste, influence and industrial-scale capabilities of the prominent family whose entrepreneurial activities have shaped Kuala Lumpur’s skyline.
Three generations of the family inhabit the 3,000 square-meter residence designed to accommodate both private and public functions.
The building includes nine bedrooms, two family rooms, a family kitchen and a private dining area, a family library, a game room, a study, a public reception area, a formal dining room, a ballroom, chapel, 21 bathrooms, a swimming pool, two guest suites plus indoor private and guest parking. The initial sketches exploring the owners’ usage requirements reveal resemblances to the boring stacked-boxes look still so ubiquitous in residential architecture. And while traces of the ”heaped trailers“ syndrome remain in the finished building, this is not the Jetsons, neither are we looking at EPCOT, Tomorrowland or the 1964 New York World's Fair. We are in the lush vegetation of a posh Kuala Lumpur residential area, and in spite of the boxiness of the structure, an elegant circular softness manages to permeate the sightlines and key details of the building, making it an agreeable part of its landscape. Inside, prominent examples of this curvilinear elegance include the amazing staircases resembling the inside of a shell when viewed from above, and the round ballroom chandelier of 13,000 custom-designed undulating petals of unglazed cast porcelain biscuit. The curved walls both inside and out have a functional purpose of providing privacy and enclosing each function gently in its own space. The overall sweeping feel inside the spaces invites the viewer in and creates soft, arching vistas. The concept consists of three layers: the base for public functions, the ring for guests and the private house for the family. The inside of the magnificent residence is gorgeous with its high ceilings, large windows and abundance of light. White color and natural wood are dominant elements but they allow the view from the vast, mostly retractable, windows to remain the main visual attraction. The residence is also a wonderful study of contrasts between inside and outside, private and public, traditional and ultra modern, man-made and natural. YTL Design Group of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was the architect of record. The Agence Jouin Manku design team included Patrick Jouin, Sanjit Manku, Yann Brossier (architect), Richard Perron (designer). Officina del Paesaggio from Lugano, Switzerland was in charge of the landscape design, and L’Observatoire, New York, USA handled the lighting.

The company Blaas in Bolzano is specialized in electro-mechanics. In the new head office the company presents its new product range and offers repair service.

On the ground floor of the building there is the sales division, on the first floor the exposition area and the repair shop. All administration offices are located on the second floor. The overall impression of the structure is a homogenous and closed building. Nevertheless, there exists a separation between the public and the private sector. The client can perceive this clear and formal internal division already from the outside.

The glass façade on the Northern side provides a maximum of visibility and transparency to the exhibition and sales area. The private spaces such as repair offices, stockrooms and offices have their façades exposed to the South, East and West which are protected with a sun screening system.

In order to establish an optimal relation between natural light, development and planning of spaces there has been created a luminous entrance hall in the centre of the building with an inner courtyard. This green open spot permits the administrative sector of the second floor to receive ample natural light and at the same time it generates a protected, quiet recreation area for the staff.

Trahan Architects: Death Valley, Louisiana

The new Louisiana State Sports Hall of Fame and Regional History Museum designed by Trahan Architects has just entered its construction phase. The museum’s donated memorabilia embodies “the contributions of the diverse cultures that have shaped the state and are crucial to understanding the unique traditions and legacy of Louisiana and the Gulf South.” Principal Trey Trahan, FAIA, describes the project as “an incredible opportunity to create a place that will celebrate the deep history of North Louisiana, as well as the indelible influence sports have had on our state’s culture.”

The $12 million project is comprised of a 28,000-square-foot contemporary venue that highlights the collections’ important cultural assets and recognizes each segment as part of the greater cultural history of the state of Louisiana. The project is situated in Natchitoches, the oldest settlement from the Louisiana Purchase. Trahan Architects has tried to embrace this history and the landscape into the design by cladding the exterior in sinker cypress planks as a reference to the region’s rich timber legacy.

According to Trey Trahan, “our design is informed by the historic architecture and materials of the region, while presenting a contemporary architectural language to this remarkable city.”

The spacing and manipulation of the exterior boards control light, views and ventilation. The arrangement creates a sense of porosity and articulation that will animate the façade and mediate the building’s scale. The louvers also make a reference to the cladding at nearby Oakland Plantation, where wood planks were used for the purpose of mitigating the climate.

The interiors highlight the “area’s distinctive geomorphology and aspects of the river’s hydromorphology.” Fluid shapes of “the braided corridors of river channels” are separated by “interstitial masses of land” to create the organizing principle for visitor circulation and gallery arrangement.

The project is scheduled to be completed in March 2011.

In Korea, ice cream bars were called "Hard," ever since the ice cream was introduced as the society was westernized. During the Japanese occupation and shortly after, the old generation used to call it "Ice keki" (Keki is a Japanese way of calling cake, which means Japanese addressed ice creams as ice cake). However, the word "ice keki." is rarly being used in the modern days in Korea. Whining because tongue stuck to a fresh opened "hard" is the memory that all Korean children share as a child.

The word, "hard" has two meanings in Korea. It first meaning is ice cream bar, as mentioned above; the second meaning is the hard disk drive. Hense, the Koreans would ask each other, "How big is your hard?" when asking for the PC's HDD capacity. Even the professionals talk like this. For the portable HDD, the Koreans usually call it, "external hard.: Mint Hard DD, or the Mint Hard is a hard disk drive that looks like a "hard" (ice cream bar).

UNStudios: Saint Petersburg, Russia Dance Theatre

UNStudio’s design has won a competition to build a 21,000 square meter dance theatre in the historic centre of St. Petersburg, Russia. The new complex houses the Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg, headed by choreographer Boris Eifman.

From the four projects presented (Jean Nouvel, UNStudio, Snøhetta & Zao), UNStudio’s design was yesterday unanimously chosen by the jury for realisation.

The dance palace forms an integrated part of the european embankment city quarter masterplan for a new urban square in the historic centre of St. Petersburg.

The urban context of the building is essential to the design. The dance palace is positioned on the square in such a way as to allow for unrestricted visibility towards the nearby Prince Vladimir and Peter and Paul cathedrals, thereby framing some of the most exceptional buildings in St. Petersburg. The sculptural qualities of the dance palace reflect those of the surrounding buildings in the masterplan, providing a connection to its surroundings yet still retaining saliency. A central main entrance is incorporated into the façade design in order to fully integrate the building into this lively public square.

UNStudio’s design for the dance palace presents an open and inviting theatre building with provision for 1300 guests (large auditorium 1000, small auditorium 300). Programmatic considerations focus on the spacious circulation of the public foyer and the transparent relationship to the surrounding public square and the city. Integration with the existing neighbouring buildings is achieved by both the scale of the building - which in elevation follows and respects St. Petersburg’s typical 28m roofline and the transformative transparency which is introduced by a facade system of triangular cladding panels. The variation between opaque and perforated panels creates a controlled openness, depending on programme, views and orientation.

‘The vertical foyer provides a high level of transparency from inside to outside, whilst also presenting a kind of stage for visitors to the theatre; a place to see and be seen. the open arrangement and balcony structure in the foyer provides plateaus for its own choreography of both intimacy and exposure.

Essential to UNStudio’s design for the main auditorium in the new dance theatre are both the acoustic considerations and the proximity of the audience to the stage. For this reason the horseshoe form was chosen. This form is considered to be one of the most successful forms acoustically in ballet and musical theatre for both performer and audience, whilst the proximity it affords to the stage ensures an intimate and collective experience for the spectator.

A mandatory requirement when we were designing the auditorium was to make it possible to see the dancer’s feet from every seat in the hall at all times, no matter where the performer was positioned on the stage.

Ole Scheeren+ OMA = MahaNakhon

Ole Scheeren, a partner for Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) and project leader of the recently completed Beijing’s CCTV Tower, considered among the world’s most imaginative contemporary architectural feats. With the tower complete, Scheeren has moved to design his first skyscraper, entitled MahaNakhon, “a dazzling, pixelated 77-storey tower,” that will rise to be the tallest building in Bangkok. With approximately 150,000 square meters, MahaNakhon will include a lush urban oasis with public gardens and a major transportation hub, luxury retail, residences, a new public square, and a five-star hotel created by New York’s Ian Schrager. Mahanakohn’s “distinctive sculptural appearance” offers a pixelated effect as the solid tower is carefully carved into. These spaces become “excavated portions of the elegant glass curtain wall to reveal the inner life of the building metaphorically and actually an architecture that encloses and protects its inhabitants while revealing the inner life of their city.” The protrusions create beautiful balconies with uninterrupted views over the city as well as larger areas for greenery.

In addition to the tower, a smaller freestanding 7-storey building, known as the cube, offers multi-level indoor/outdoor terraces with an extensive mix of dining and leisure facilities. These facilities activate the lower levels as the general public will have access via a direct above-ground pedestrian link.

The skyscrapper is due to be completed by 2012.

The Brands pack from adidas’ Five-Two 3 project is a collaboration with 5 global lifestyle brands, all from different genres of fashion. With each brand having it’s own unique style the pack showcases the diversity and broad appeal the five footwear models have in today’s lifestyle market. Today we take a look at the Forum designed by New York based creative collective, Nom de Guerre.

Nom de Guerre’s Forum builds on the revolutionary basketball shoe’s hardwearing ankle straps and heel support made for hard landings, revising the shoe using the United States Military jungle boot as an inspiration prototype. Next, Nom de Guerre reworked the Forum’s ankle strap to reference war hospital ankle bandaging. Additionally, the colours on the sole of the shoe serves as a reminder of the many hours of target practice accrued during training. The byproduct of these elements is an extremely versatile shoe designed to accommodate a range of climates while providing critical protection over various terrain.

Nom de Guerre is a New York based creative collective founded by Holly Harnsongkram, Wil Whitney, Devon Turnbull, and Isa Saalabi who combine to bring together a multi-faceted background of retail, sculpture, painting, graphic design and typography.
